A medical expert has highlighted several common foods that may increase the risk of Colon Cancer, stressing that long-term diet and lifestyle habits can influence the likelihood of developing the disease.
According to Dr Vartika Vishwani, a consulting breast and gynaecologic onco-surgeon based in Gurugram, everyday food choices may affect gut health and potentially contribute to colon cancer over time. She shared the information in a recent social media video discussing diet-related cancer risks.
Processed Meat
Dr Vishwani said processed meats such as bacon, sausages, and hot dogs may increase colon cancer risk when consumed regularly.
She noted that these foods contain preservatives and chemical compounds that may damage the lining of the colon. The World Health Organization classifies processed meat as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning there is strong evidence linking it to cancer in humans.
Red Meat
High consumption of red meat—including beef, lamb, and pork—may also raise colon cancer risk, particularly when cooked at high temperatures such as grilling or frying.
According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, red meat is categorised as a Group 2 carcinogen, indicating possible cancer risk based on available scientific evidence.
Low-Fibre Foods
The oncologist also warned about diets low in fibre. Foods such as refined bread, white rice, and many processed snacks may slow digestion and increase exposure of the colon to harmful substances.
Dr Vishwani recommends consuming around 25 to 30 grams of fibre daily. Foods like fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains help maintain healthy digestion and may reduce colon cancer risk.
Alcohol Consumption
Regular alcohol intake may irritate the gut lining and increase the likelihood of cellular mutations over time.
The World Health Organization classifies alcohol as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning it is associated with a higher risk of several types of cancer when consumed regularly.
Deep-Fried Foods
Deep-fried foods such as French fries and fried snacks may contain harmful compounds formed during high-temperature cooking. These substances can contribute to inflammation and DNA damage, factors associated with cancer development.
Importance of a Balanced Diet
Dr Vishwani advised focusing on nutrient-rich foods that support gut health, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and lean protein sources.
Health experts emphasise that colon cancer usually develops over many years, and long-term lifestyle choices—including diet, physical activity, and alcohol consumption—can play an important role in prevention.
