Two T20 World Cup semifinal matches played almost a decade apart highlight how the India national cricket team has transformed its batting approach in the shortest format of the game.
The comparison between India’s semifinal in the 2016 ICC Men's T20 World Cup and the recent semifinal in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup shows how scoring patterns and strategies have evolved in modern T20 cricket.
2016 Semifinal: A Different Approach
On March 31, 2016, India faced the West Indies national cricket team in a semifinal at Wankhede Stadium.
After being asked to bat first, India posted a total of 192/2. The innings was anchored by Virat Kohli, who scored an unbeaten 89 runs off 47 balls.
Openers Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane started cautiously, scoring 43 runs from 31 balls and 40 runs from 35 balls respectively. Despite the strong total, West Indies successfully chased the target with two balls remaining.
2026 Semifinal: A More Aggressive Style
Nearly ten years later, India adopted a significantly more aggressive strategy during their semifinal against the England national cricket team at the same venue.
In that match, India posted a massive total of 253 runs, one of their highest scores in T20 World Cup history. The innings was led by Sanju Samson, who scored 89 runs from 42 balls.
Even after losing Abhishek Sharma early in the powerplay, the team maintained attacking intent and reached 100 runs in just 8.3 overs—much faster than the pace seen in the 2016 match.
Rise of High-Scoring T20 Cricket
The comparison between the two matches reflects a broader shift in global T20 batting philosophy. Teams today often aim for significantly higher totals, particularly on batting-friendly pitches.
While India reached 192 in the 2016 semifinal, the 2026 semifinal produced a combined score of over 500 runs, showing how scoring rates have increased in modern T20 cricket.
Influence of the IPL
Experts believe the Indian Premier League has played a major role in this transformation.
In particular, the aggressive batting style displayed by Sunrisers Hyderabad during the 2024 IPL season is widely considered influential. Their lineup, featuring players like Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen, and Aiden Markram, consistently attacked from the first ball and posted several large totals.
That approach has since been adopted by multiple teams in both franchise cricket and international matches.
A New Era of T20 Strategy
Since the 2024 IPL season, India has recorded multiple totals above 250 in T20 matches, underlining the shift towards high-scoring, aggressive cricket.
Analysts say this evolution reflects not only India’s changing strategy but also the broader transformation of T20 cricket worldwide, where teams increasingly prioritise attacking batting from the start of an innings.
