New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner said his team is prepared to challenge India on home soil as they head into the ICC Men's T20 World Cup final. Speaking ahead of the match, Santner acknowledged that New Zealand may be considered underdogs but insisted the team is focused on delivering a strong performance.
The final between India national cricket team and New Zealand national cricket team will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
‘Breaking Hearts’ Comment
During a pre-match press conference, Santner was asked whether New Zealand would be willing to play the role of “bad guys” by defeating India in front of a large home crowd.
Responding to the question, Santner said winning the trophy remains the team’s primary goal, even if it means disappointing local supporters.
“I wouldn’t mind breaking a few hearts to lift the trophy,” he said, while emphasising that the team aims to stay calm and focused regardless of the occasion.
New Zealand’s Final Record
New Zealand has been a consistent performer in recent international tournaments but has fallen short in several finals. The team reached the finals of the 2019 Cricket World Cup, the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, but did not win any of those matches.
Santner said the current squad is aware of those results but prefers to focus on playing quality cricket rather than dwelling on past outcomes.
Strategy for the Final
The New Zealand captain also said the team hopes to quiet the large crowd expected at the Ahmedabad stadium by delivering a disciplined performance.
He noted that T20 cricket often turns on small moments and that maintaining composure in key situations will be important during the final.
Path to the Final
New Zealand secured their place in the final after defeating South Africa national cricket team in the semi-final at Eden Gardens.
In that match, opener Finn Allen scored an unbeaten century off just 33 balls, helping New Zealand secure a comfortable nine-wicket victory.
Familiar Rivals
India and New Zealand recently played a five-match T20 international series in India, with the hosts winning the series 4–1. Santner said the recent matches mean both teams are familiar with each other’s strategies heading into the final.
Despite the challenge of playing in front of a large home crowd, Santner said the New Zealand squad is excited for the occasion and ready for the opportunity to compete for the title.
