Recently released documents related to Jeffrey Epstein show that he repeatedly highlighted his association with the former head of the Nobel Peace Prize committee while communicating with prominent global figures.
The files, made public by the U.S. Justice Department last month, include emails and text exchanges in which Epstein referenced Thorbjørn Jagland, who led the Norwegian Nobel Committee from 2009 to 2015.
Epstein, a former financier who was convicted of sex offences, mentioned hosting Jagland at properties in New York and Paris during the 2010s. The documents indicate that he cited this association in conversations with well-known individuals including Richard Branson, Larry Summers, Bill Gates and Steve Bannon.
According to the records, Epstein informed contacts that Jagland would be visiting or staying at his residences and suggested they might find it worthwhile to meet him. In one message exchange from 2018, Epstein referred to Jagland in a conversation with Bannon and made remarks about the Nobel Peace Prize decision process.
The documents do not provide evidence of direct lobbying efforts for the Nobel Peace Prize. However, they show that Epstein frequently referenced his connection to Jagland in correspondence that also discussed business and other matters.
Jagland, 75, has since been charged in Norway with “aggravated corruption,” according to the Norwegian economic crime unit Økokrim. The investigation was launched following information contained in the released files.
Økokrim stated that it is examining whether gifts, travel or loans were received in connection with Jagland’s position. Police have searched his residence in Oslo as well as two additional properties.
Jagland’s lawyers have said he denies the charges. He was questioned by police as part of the ongoing investigation.
During Jagland’s tenure as head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to former U.S. President Barack Obama in 2009 and to the European Union in 2012.
The documents also mention Terje Rød Larsen, a Norwegian diplomat known for his role in the Oslo Peace Accords. Larsen and his wife are reportedly facing corruption charges in Norway related to their association with Epstein.
The release of the files has drawn international attention due to the number of high-profile names appearing in communications. Being mentioned in the documents does not indicate wrongdoing, and no charges have been reported against the business and political figures referenced in the correspondence.
Authorities in Norway have said investigations are ongoing, and further details will be shared as legal proceedings move forward.
The case continues to raise questions about Epstein’s network and the extent of his connections with political, business and diplomatic circles across multiple countries.
