Ghee has long been a staple in Indian kitchens, valued for its rich flavour and traditional use in cooking. However, with growing health awareness and the availability of multiple varieties in the market, many people are unsure about how much ghee is safe to consume and whether it should be included in a daily diet.
Experts say that understanding the nutritional value of ghee and consuming it in moderation can help clear common misconceptions about this traditional ingredient.
Recommended quantity and nutritional value
According to Dr. Gopal Jee Sharma, senior consultant physician at Kailash Hospital in Dehradun, moderate consumption of ghee can be part of a balanced diet.
He explained that one teaspoon of ghee contains about 45 calories and includes saturated fats along with beneficial fatty acids. Ghee also contains fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E, and K, which can support overall health when consumed in appropriate quantities.
Health experts generally recommend about one to two teaspoons of ghee per day, depending on a person’s dietary needs and physical activity levels.
Myth 1: Ghee always causes weight gain
One of the most common beliefs about ghee is that it automatically leads to weight gain.
Dr. Sharma said this is not necessarily true. Weight gain typically occurs when calorie intake exceeds the body’s energy requirements.
He noted that consuming small amounts of ghee within a balanced diet does not automatically lead to obesity, particularly when combined with regular physical activity.
In moderate quantities, ghee can add flavour and nutritional value to meals without significantly affecting body weight.
Myth 2: Heart patients must avoid ghee completely
Another widely discussed concern is whether people with heart conditions should avoid ghee entirely.
Dr. Sharma said complete avoidance may not always be necessary. Some individuals with heart conditions may still consume small amounts of ghee after consulting their doctor and monitoring their cholesterol levels.
However, people with high LDL cholesterol, uncontrolled diabetes, or existing coronary artery disease are advised to seek medical guidance before including ghee regularly in their diet.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle—including regular exercise and a fibre-rich diet—is also important for heart health.
Popular ghee varieties in the market
In recent years, A2 ghee, particularly derived from Gir cow milk, has gained popularity among consumers.
According to Arvind Patel, managing director of Bharat Vedica, demand for A2 ghee has been increasing as consumers look for traditional and natural food products.
However, the rise in demand has also made it important for consumers to verify the authenticity of ghee products available in the market.
How to identify pure ghee
Experts say certain characteristics can help identify pure ghee.
Traditional Bilona-method ghee, for example, is prepared by churning curd to obtain butter and then heating it slowly. This process helps preserve natural fats and nutrients.
Pure ghee typically develops a natural golden colour, a mild aroma, and a slightly grainy texture.
Transparency in production is also an important factor. Experts advise consumers to check ingredient lists, sourcing details, and production processes when selecting ghee products.
Moderation remains key
Health professionals emphasise that ghee itself is not harmful when consumed responsibly.
Including moderate amounts of ghee in a balanced diet, along with regular exercise and healthy lifestyle habits, can allow people to enjoy its flavour and nutritional benefits without unnecessary health concerns.
However, experts recommend consulting healthcare professionals before making major dietary changes, especially for individuals with existing medical conditions.
