Hema Malini Reacts as BAFTA Honours Dharmendra

Veteran actor Hema Malini has expressed her emotions after the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) paid tribute to late superstar Dharmendra during its 79th awards ceremony.
The tribute took place on February 22 as part of the In Memoriam segment at the BAFTA Awards. The recognition of Dharmendra moved many fans across India and abroad.
Speaking to Variety India, Hema Malini said Dharmendra’s popularity extended beyond India. She recalled how he was admired by fans internationally and described his presence as one that crossed borders.
Remembering her late husband, she said she misses him deeply and often wonders when she will meet him again. She also spoke about the time they spent together during film shoots, as they frequently worked on projects together.
Hema Malini and Dharmendra shared the screen in several successful films, including Seeta Aur Geeta (1972), Sholay (1975) and Dream Girl (1977). Reflecting on his work, she mentioned that she particularly enjoyed Chupke Chupke and Sholay, adding that she plans to revisit more of his films when time allows.
The couple first met in 1970 and later married in 1980. Dharmendra, who was previously married to Prakash Kaur, tied the knot with Hema Malini after their relationship developed during their years of collaboration in the film industry.
Dharmendra passed away on November 24 last year at his Mumbai residence at the age of 89 following age-related illness. His death marked the end of an era in Hindi cinema, where he was widely known as Bollywood’s “He-Man.”
Following his passing, Hema Malini shared a heartfelt note on social media, describing him as a loving husband, devoted father to their daughters Esha and Ahana, and a constant source of support in her life. She highlighted his humility despite immense popularity and said his legacy in Indian cinema would remain unforgettable.
The BAFTA tribute has once again brought attention to Dharmendra’s contribution to cinema and the global recognition he earned during his long career.
