India is closely monitoring rising tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan, as both sides appear to be moving toward a serious military escalation.
Islamabad has described the current situation as an “open war” following reported airstrikes on what it called terrorist hideouts inside Afghanistan. Kabul, in turn, has responded with what it termed measured military action.
Escalating Strains
Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have deteriorated sharply in recent years. Pakistan has repeatedly blamed the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) for attacks on its soil and has carried out strikes targeting alleged militant positions.
Pakistan has also claimed that Baloch insurgents operate from Afghan territory. Afghan authorities have generally responded by asserting their sovereignty and defending their actions as necessary responses.
In the latest round of hostilities, Pakistan reportedly targeted not only alleged militant infrastructure but also Afghan military facilities in Kabul and other cities, marking a significant escalation.
India’s Position
India has expressed concern over cross-border military actions that result in civilian casualties. New Delhi has maintained that such operations could destabilise the region.
At the same time, India has publicly supported Afghanistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence.
Over the past few years, India’s engagement with the Taliban-led administration in Kabul has evolved. Initially centred on humanitarian assistance, ties have expanded to include discussions on development cooperation.
Strategic Calculations
India’s improved working relationship with Kabul comes at a sensitive time. While tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan may ease some concerns in New Delhi about Pakistan’s long-standing “strategic depth” doctrine, a full-scale conflict would be unwelcome.
Officials are aware that a prolonged war or spillover effects — such as a refugee crisis or humanitarian emergency — could undermine regional stability.
India is also exploring economic cooperation in Afghanistan, including possible investments in the mining sector and hydroelectric projects. These discussions come as other regional players, including China, increase their footprint in Afghanistan.
A major conflict could disrupt such initiatives and delay development plans that India has sought to advance.
Regional Implications
The escalation between Afghanistan and Pakistan has wider implications for South Asia. Any sustained military confrontation could impact trade routes, security dynamics and diplomatic alignments in the region.
For India, the immediate focus remains on safeguarding its interests while advocating stability. Officials continue to monitor developments closely as the situation evolves.
As tensions rise, diplomatic channels and regional dialogue may play a crucial role in preventing further deterioration.
