India Closely Monitoring Afghanistan-Pakistan Tensions

India is closely monitoring rising tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan, as both sides appear to be moving toward a serious military escalation.

Islamabad has described the current situation as an “open war” following reported airstrikes on what it called terrorist hideouts inside Afghanistan. Kabul, in turn, has responded with what it termed measured military action.

Escalating Strains

Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have deteriorated sharply in recent years. Pakistan has repeatedly blamed the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) for attacks on its soil and has carried out strikes targeting alleged militant positions.

Pakistan has also claimed that Baloch insurgents operate from Afghan territory. Afghan authorities have generally responded by asserting their sovereignty and defending their actions as necessary responses.

India’s improved working relationship with Kabul comes at a sensitive time. While tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan may ease some concerns in New Delhi about Pakistan’s long-standing “strategic depth” doctrine, a full-scale conflict would be unwelcome.

Officials are aware that a prolonged war or spillover effects — such as a refugee crisis or humanitarian emergency — could undermine regional stability.

India is also exploring economic cooperation in Afghanistan, including possible investments in the mining sector and hydroelectric projects. These discussions come as other regional players, including China, increase their footprint in Afghanistan.
