An Indian tech reviewer has alleged that he and his family faced discriminatory treatment at a luxury resort in Mauritius, claiming that staff prioritised European guests while ignoring them.
The man, who posts on X under the handle @Starcommander10, said the incident occurred during a family holiday that he had planned to celebrate landing a new job. He did not specify the exact date of the visit.
‘Worst experience in Mauritius’
In a detailed social media post, he said he spent around ₹3.5 lakh on a stay at a five-star resort in Mauritius, known for its beaches and luxury tourism.
“As an Indian I have faced many instances of racism but the worst experience was in Mauritius,” he wrote.
According to his account, the incident took place on Easter Sunday. Around 1pm, he called the reception desk to book a table for lunch and was told to wait 15 minutes due to limited availability.
However, he said no one called back even after 45 minutes. Concerned, he and his parents went down to the restaurant themselves.
Allegations of Being Ignored
When they arrived, he claimed there were no tables available and staff did not provide clear information.
He alleged that a staff member asked whether they were guests at the property and then walked away without offering an explanation.
Shortly afterward, he said a European guest informed them that the hotel had organised a special Easter lunch for guests.
The Indian family, he claimed, had not been informed about the event.
“We waited and waited. It was now 2:30pm. My mom then went to an old housekeeping lady staff and literally begged if we can have lunch somewhere,” he wrote.
He described feeling humiliated, especially after having paid a significant amount for the stay.
Claims of Unequal Treatment
According to the post, a housekeeping staff member eventually guided them to the Easter buffet area.
The man said that while food was available, he felt the staff’s behaviour remained dismissive.
He alleged that when he asked for more French fries, he was told they were finished and only potato wedges were available. However, he claimed that when another guest — described as “white skinned” — made a similar request, fries were promptly refilled.
“I was stunned by the racism,” he wrote.
He further claimed that when he raised the issue with the hotel manager, he was not offered an apology but was told that his feedback had been noted.
Resort Yet to Respond
The resort has not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of writing.
It is not clear whether a formal complaint has been lodged with the hotel management or Mauritius tourism authorities.
The post has sparked debate online, with some users expressing solidarity with the family, while others urged verification and further clarification from the resort.
Wider Conversation
Incidents involving alleged discriminatory treatment at international destinations have periodically triggered discussions about racial bias in global hospitality.
While social media posts can amplify such experiences quickly, they often represent one side of the account. Independent verification of the claims was not immediately available.
The incident has once again raised questions about equal treatment in luxury hospitality spaces and the experiences of Indian travellers abroad.
