Former England captain Michael Vaughan has called for severe punishment following the latest off-field controversy involving England cricket, after fast bowler Brydon Carse was dropped from the squad for the second Test against Pakistan amid an ongoing investigation.
Carse was filmed in handcuffs outside a venue in Derby after Durham’s County Championship victory over Derbyshire. The England and Wales Cricket Board referred the matter to the Cricket Regulator, which is investigating the incident. Carse has been removed from selection while the full facts are established and has been replaced by Sonny Baker for the Lord’s Test. Reports said Carse was later released without charge.
Vaughan said England needed a punishment strong enough to send a clear message throughout the national setup. However, he also said he would not want Carse to become a scapegoat for wider disciplinary problems within England cricket.
The controversy has again raised questions about England’s team culture and a series of recent off-field incidents involving players. Vaughan warned that repeated controversies could undermine efforts to move attention back to cricket.
