Piyush Goyal urges Japanese firms to invest and expand operations in India

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has invited Japanese companies to increase investments in India, strengthen local manufacturing and establish innovation centres. He said India’s growing economy, large consumer market and expanding international trade partnerships offer significant opportunities for Japanese businesses.

Addressing representatives of Japanese companies, Goyal said India is opening up to greater international engagement through free trade agreements. He encouraged firms to use India’s skilled workforce and domestic market while expanding their operations.

The minister also stressed the importance of deeper localisation, saying it could help companies improve cost competitiveness. He called on Japanese businesses to establish more research and development centres, innovation hubs and global capability centres (GCCs) in India.

Goyal also said the government is willing to support innovation and engineering partnerships between Japanese companies and Indian academic institutions. He urged firms to establish new factories and manufacturing capacities to serve both the Indian market and global markets.

Japan is currently India’s fifth-largest source of foreign investment. Between April 2000 and March 2026, India received USD 48.14 billion in FDI from Japan, accounting for around 6% of total FDI inflows during the period.

Goyal is leading a 200-member business delegation to Japan to strengthen trade and investment ties. Japan had set an investment target of 10 trillion yen, or around Rs 60,000 crore, in India over a decade.
