India opener Abhishek Sharma will be under close watch as India face South Africa in their T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 opener in Ahmedabad.
The left-handed batter has struggled for form in the tournament so far. He has faced just eight deliveries across matches and is yet to score a run, registering ducks against USA, Netherlands and Pakistan.
Saba Karim Urges Patience
Former India cricketer and selector Saba Karim has backed Abhishek to overcome this rough patch.
Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Karim said the young opener needs to show patience at the top of the order. According to him, opposition bowlers are well-prepared for Abhishek’s aggressive style from the first ball.
Karim added that the batter must adapt and “break that pattern” if he wants to return to form. He suggested that playing with a straight bat and easing the pressure of scoring at extremely high strike rates early on could help.
He also said that a slight tweak in approach — without changing his natural game — may allow Abhishek to settle before accelerating.
Tough Phase for the Opener
Abhishek’s struggles have extended beyond this tournament. In his last seven T20 internationals, he has recorded five ducks — the most by an Indian batter in a single calendar year in the format.
Against Pakistan, he was dismissed in the opening over by Salman Agha. Earlier, Netherlands spinner Aryan Dutt accounted for his wicket.
He also missed the Namibia fixture due to illness but returned to the playing XI thereafter.
Big Test Ahead
With India entering the Super 8 stage, the clash against South Africa presents an important opportunity for Abhishek to regain confidence.
Karim described this phase as one that many players experience in their careers. He believes that if Abhishek can navigate the first few overs carefully, he has the ability to compensate and play a significant role for India.
As the tournament intensifies, India will hope their opener rediscovers form at a crucial juncture.
