Salt’s 62 in Vain as SL Rock England

T20 World Cup 2026: Phil Salt scores 62 but Sri Lanka’s spinners leave England struggling in Super 8 clash at Pallekele.

Salt’s 62 in Vain as SL Rock England

England struggled to build momentum despite a fighting half-century from Phil Salt in their T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 match against Sri Lanka national cricket team in Pallekele.

After being put in to bat, England lost early wickets and found themselves under pressure for most of the innings.

Early Blow for England

Sri Lanka’s bowlers set the tone from the powerplay. Spin was introduced early, and Maheesh Theekshana made an immediate impact by removing Jacob Bethell with his first delivery.

Jos Buttler struggled for rhythm and was dismissed after failing to convert his start. England ended the powerplay at 37/2, already on the back foot.

Run-Out Adds to Trouble

England’s problems deepened when captain Dasun Shanaka effected a sharp run-out to send Tom Banton back. Sri Lanka’s fielding intensity kept the pressure on.

Harry Brook was later trapped leg-before by Dunith Wellalage, leaving England in further difficulty at the halfway mark.

Salt Holds Firm

Amid the collapse, Phil Salt stood out. Batting cautiously compared to his usual aggressive style, he reached his half-century while wickets continued to fall around him.

He managed to anchor the innings briefly and was the only England batter to find some consistency. However, he eventually departed for 62, caught in the deep off Wellalage, as England slipped to 106/6.

Spin Dominance

Sri Lanka’s spin attack continued to dictate terms. Theekshana returned to claim another wicket, reducing England to 124/7 and leaving them with limited batting resources in the final overs.

Sam Curran also fell attempting to accelerate, miscuing a slower delivery to long-on.

England Facing Low Total

With regular wickets and minimal partnerships, England appeared headed towards a below-par total in challenging conditions.

Sri Lanka, who opted to bowl after winning the toss, maintained control through disciplined bowling and sharp fielding.

As the Super 8 stage intensifies, England will need a strong bowling effort to defend what looks to be a modest score on the board.
