Tension escalated in Shimla after six members of the Devbhoomi Sangharsh Samiti were detained for allegedly preventing Muslims from offering namaz at the Sanjauli mosque. Police registered an FIR against the individuals identified as Madan Thakur, Vijay Sharma, Kalpana Sharma, Shweta Chauhan, Shilpi and Parul.
The incident unfolded on Friday when worshippers gathered outside the mosque for prayers. Their presence led to objections from a section of local residents, prompting members of the organisation, including the accused, to assemble at the site. They reportedly attempted to stop people from entering the mosque, claiming the structure had been declared illegal by a local court and should not be used for religious activities.
The group also raised doubts over the identity and citizenship of those arriving for namaz, alleging that verification had not been conducted. Some locals attempted to turn back the worshippers, further intensifying the situation.
As tensions grew, additional police forces were deployed to restore order. Officers intervened quickly, dispersed the crowd, and stabilised the area.
Following the confrontation, the organisation submitted a letter to senior police officials in Shimla demanding restrictions on gatherings at the mosque. They argued that the rising number of visitors could not be identified and requested the authorities to disconnect electricity and water supply to the structure, citing the earlier court decision declaring parts of the building unauthorized.
The Sanjauli mosque has been at the centre of controversy since last year, when protests called for partial demolition of the construction. A court later directed the mosque committee to remove three floors within two months. The site has witnessed repeated tensions, including previous clashes and the use of water cannons during demonstrations.
The atmosphere in the region remains sensitive as authorities continue monitoring the situation closely.
