Stock Market Holiday Today: NSE, BSE Shut for Republic Day 2026, Trading to Resume Tuesday

Indian stock markets are closed today, Monday, January 26, 2026, as the country observes Republic Day, one of the officially notified trading holidays. Both the National Stock Exchange and the Bombay Stock Exchange have suspended all trading activities for the day.

As per the official holiday calendar, all market segments remain non-operational, including:

  • Equity trading

  • Equity derivatives

  • Currency derivatives

  • Securities Lending and Borrowing (SLB) segment

In addition to equity markets, the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) is also fully closed today, with both morning and evening sessions suspended, halting trading in commodities such as gold, silver, crude oil, and agricultural contracts.

When will trading resume?

Trading across Indian exchanges will resume on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, following the long Republic Day weekend. On normal trading days, equity markets operate from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm, with a pre-open session beginning at 9:00 am.

January 26 is among the 16 officially scheduled stock market holidays in 2026, excluding weekends. The next major nationwide market holiday after Republic Day will be Holi, falling in March 2026, when exchanges will once again remain shut.

📉 Markets before the holiday

The holiday comes after a weak previous trading session, with Indian benchmark indices closing lower amid broad-based selling pressure. The Sensex slipped nearly 770 points, while the Nifty 50 fell below the 25,100 mark.

Market sentiment has remained cautious due to:

  • Persistent foreign investor selling

  • Weak earnings growth in early Q3 FY26 results

  • Concerns ahead of the Union Budget 2026

Sectorally, realty, PSU banks, and capital goods stocks saw the steepest losses, while select IT and FMCG stocks provided limited support.

🇮🇳 Republic Day context

India is celebrating its 77th Republic Day this year, with added historical significance as the nation marks 150 years of “Vande Mataram”, the national song. The day is observed as a national holiday, during which financial markets, banks, and several government institutions remain closed.
