Tata Sons Board to Meet September 17, Chandrasekaran Exit May Be Discussed

The Tata Sons board is likely to meet on September 17, with chairman N Chandrasekaran’s decision not to seek a third term potentially coming up for discussion. The meeting could also provide clarity on the next steps in the group’s leadership succession, although no formal proposal or vote has been confirmed.

According to a Moneycontrol report, the board is expected to discuss routine matters and possibly decide a date for the Tata Sons annual general meeting (AGM). The AGM scheduled for August 18 was postponed after the meeting could not proceed due to a lack of quorum.

Chandrasekaran announced on August 12 that he would not seek another term as Tata Sons chairman. However, this does not mean he has resigned with immediate effect. The reasons behind his decision have also not been disclosed.

Meanwhile, the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) has reportedly started the process of identifying his successor. Tata Sons is the principal holding company of the Tata group, making the succession process a major leadership decision for the conglomerate.

The upcoming board meeting could become significant if any director proposes that Chandrasekaran reconsider his decision. However, there is currently no confirmation that such a proposal will be made or put to a vote.

Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata and trustee Venu Srinivasan have reportedly taken differing positions on Chandrasekaran’s continuation during earlier board discussions. Their views could gain importance if the issue is formally raised.

For now, the focus remains on the September 17 meeting and whether the board simply takes note of Chandrasekaran’s decision or considers any alternative course.
