US Embassy in India Warns B1/B2 Visa Holders Against Misuse, Cautions on Possible Permanent Ban

The US Embassy in India has issued a strong advisory for applicants and holders of B1 and B2 visitor visas, cautioning that misuse of the visa or violation of travel conditions could lead to denial, deportation, or a permanent ban on future travel to the United States.

In a video message shared on social media, the embassy stressed that visitors must clearly understand what activities are permitted and prohibited under the B1/B2 visa category. Consular officers, the advisory said, have the authority to deny a visa application if they believe the applicant does not intend to comply with visa rules.

The embassy underscored that responsibility lies with the visa holder to use the visitor visa strictly for approved purposes. Overstaying the permitted duration or engaging in unauthorised activities may result in long-term immigration consequences, including permanent ineligibility for US visas.

The warning follows a similar advisory issued a day earlier for international students, where the embassy highlighted that violations of US laws could lead to student visa revocation and deportation. The embassy reiterated that a US visa is a privilege, not an entitlement.

In recent weeks, advisories have also been issued for H-1B and H-4 visa applicants, warning that breaches of immigration regulations could attract criminal penalties. The series of warnings comes amid stricter enforcement of immigration rules under the administration of Donald Trump, which has intensified scrutiny of visa compliance.

The tightening of visa norms has coincided with a decline in international student enrolments in the US. Official data shows a significant year-on-year drop in new student arrivals, with India accounting for a major share of the decline. At the same time, skilled worker visa applicants are facing extended waiting periods due to heightened checks and policy changes.

The embassy has advised applicants to refer only to official government sources for accurate information on visa rules and compliance requirements.
