Bangladesh Police Arrest Another Suspect in Dipu Chandra Das Killing, Say He Played Key Role

Bangladesh police have arrested another suspect in connection with the killing of Hindu garment worker Dipu Chandra Das, an incident that sparked widespread outrage and renewed concerns over the safety of minority communities in the country.

The latest arrest was made by the detective branch of the Bangladesh Police, which confirmed that the suspect had been evading authorities since the murder. Officials said the accused had gone into hiding for nearly two weeks following the crime and was tracked down after sustained surveillance efforts.

Police officials stated that the arrested individual played a key role in the attack and that his involvement has been corroborated through witness accounts, confessional statements from other accused, and evidence gathered during the investigation. Assistance from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police was instrumental in locating and arresting the suspect.

The killing took place in Mymensingh in December, when Dipu Chandra Das was allegedly attacked by a mob following accusations of blasphemy. However, family members and several eyewitnesses have disputed this claim, asserting that the killing was linked to a workplace dispute rather than religious reasons.

According to investigators, a total of 21 people have been arrested so far in the case, with most of them already sent to jail after completion of remand proceedings. Several accused have reportedly given confessional statements, while key witnesses have also recorded their testimonies.

The case triggered protests and strong reactions in India and Bangladesh alike, with rights groups and community organisations demanding strict action against those responsible and stronger measures to protect minority communities. Authorities have said the investigation remains ongoing and further arrests are likely as police continue to identify all those involved in the incident.
