Who Is Casey Means? Trump’s Surgeon General Pick

Dr. Casey Means, President Donald Trump’s nominee for US Surgeon General, appeared before senators at her confirmation hearing, where she outlined her views on chronic disease and public health reform.

Speaking before the Senate health committee in Washington, Means said she intends to focus on addressing the root causes of chronic illness in the United States.

Focus on Chronic Disease

During her opening remarks, the 38-year-old nominee said the country is struggling with preventable diseases.

“Our nation is angry, exhausted, and hurting from preventable diseases,” she told lawmakers. She emphasised what she described as “evidence-based, modifiable drivers” of chronic illness.

Means pointed to factors such as ultra-processed foods, chemical exposure, lack of physical activity, chronic stress, loneliness and what she termed “overmedicalization” as key concerns.

Professional Background

Dr. Means is a Stanford-educated surgeon, author and wellness entrepreneur. She is also known as a wellness influencer.

Her nomination has reportedly been supported by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and aligns with the administration’s “Make America Healthy Again” agenda.

Originally scheduled to testify in October, her hearing was postponed after she went into labor with her first child.

Public Health Views

Means promotes a holistic approach to healthcare, focusing on metabolic health as a central factor in chronic illness. She has criticised what she sees as a fragmented medical system that treats symptoms rather than underlying causes.

She has also publicly questioned certain aspects of vaccine policy, including cumulative vaccine schedules and early infant vaccinations. Her remarks have generated debate among public health experts.

In addition, she has spoken about issues such as raw milk regulation, birth control prescriptions and alternative approaches to conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Senate Review Process

The Senate confirmation process will determine whether Means is formally appointed as Surgeon General. Lawmakers are expected to evaluate her medical background, policy positions and views on public health.

If confirmed, she would serve as the nation’s leading public health spokesperson and play a key role in shaping federal health messaging.

The confirmation hearing marks a significant step in the administration’s broader health policy agenda, which places strong emphasis on lifestyle-based disease prevention.
