Bank Strike Deferred: What Customers Need to Know Now
The September 28-30 nationwide bank strike has been deferred after IBA and UFBU agreed to fresh talks on Saturday holidays, PLI and other pending demands.
The nationwide three-day bank strike scheduled for September 28 to 30 has been deferred after the Indian Banks’ Association and United Forum of Bank Unions reached an understanding on key demands.
The immediate reason was an agreement to form a high-level IBA-UFBU committee to examine the demand for declaring all Saturdays as holidays. The panel will explore alternatives and consult stakeholders, including customers, before working out a solution.
However, the deferment does not mean the five-day banking week has been approved. Bank branches currently remain closed on Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays, while the remaining Saturday holidays are still under discussion.
The performance-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for Scale IV and above officers will also be discussed with government participation. Other pending matters listed in earlier discussions will be taken up between the two sides.
Bank unions have also raised issues involving pension, dearness allowance and changes related to the National Pension System and restoration of the old pension system.
For customers, the immediate relief is that the planned September 28-30 strike will not take place. Normal banking operations can therefore continue as scheduled.
However, the dispute itself has not been completely resolved. The unions have only deferred their agitation while negotiations continue over Saturday holidays, PLI and other pending demands.
The next major step will be the formation of the IBA-UFBU committee and fresh discussions on the outstanding issues.
