Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India had lifted 250 million people out of poverty over the past decade, highlighting citizen empowerment as a central goal of governance.
Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi on Tuesday, Modi said governments should strengthen people’s capabilities instead of making them dependent on the system.
He argued that public authority should help citizens improve their lives and access greater opportunities. The poverty-reduction figure was presented as part of his broader argument about the role of governance in economic and social development.
Technology should benefit more people
Modi also called for a broader approach to technological progress, saying its benefits should reach millions rather than remain concentrated among a privileged few.
He emphasised the importance of expanding access to knowledge, innovation and economic opportunities. According to the Prime Minister, governments and businesses should assess progress not only through economic growth and technological advancement, but also by examining how widely their benefits are shared.
Modi pointed to India’s large digital audience as an example of technology’s potential to connect people and expand access to information. He cited more than 500 million users each on YouTube and Instagram.
His remarks placed digital access and citizen empowerment at the centre of a wider discussion on development. He argued that technology could help people build skills, participate in the economy and improve their prospects.
