Dhruv Rathee Detained in Gurugram Ahead of CJP Protest in Delhi
YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was detained at his Gurugram residence on Saturday after police urged him not to travel to Delhi for the Cockroach Janta Party’s protest at Jantar Mantar.
Germany-based YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was detained at his residence in Gurugram on Saturday, October 10, ahead of a planned Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.
According to Gurugram Police, teams from Delhi and Gurugram visited Rathee’s home in Kendriya Vihar society, Sector 56, and asked him not to travel to the national capital. Police said the detention followed his refusal to comply with their requests.
Officials said personnel would remain deployed outside his residence until further orders.
The protest, led by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, seeks the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Authorities have not granted permission for the gathering.
Security arrangements in Delhi were significantly tightened ahead of the planned demonstration, with more than 40,000 Delhi Police and Central Armed Police Forces personnel deployed. Barricades and spike strips were also installed in parts of the capital.
CJP condemns detention
The CJP confirmed Rathee’s detention through social media posts and condemned the police action. The organisation alleged that the detention was part of a broader crackdown on people questioning electoral processes and demanded Rathee’s immediate release.
Rathee had recently shared a video urging people to join the protest at Jantar Mantar on Saturday. The demonstration centres on allegations concerning electoral roll revisions, which remain contested.
