TVS Family Dispute: Venu Srinivasan and Mallika Differ Over Asset Ownership
A reported dispute over the TVS family’s succession plan has raised questions about whether assigning businesses to the next generation also settles ownership of family wealth.
A dispute over the division of family assets has reportedly emerged between TVS Motor chairman emeritus Venu Srinivasan and industrialist Mallika Srinivasan. The disagreement centres on the succession arrangements for their children, Lakshmi Venu and Sudarshan Venu.
The dispute has continued for nearly 18 months, with mediation attempts reportedly failing and a possible legal battle under consideration.
According to a report, the key question is whether a memorandum of understanding (MoU), signed by the four family members on March 21, 2024, settled ownership of the family’s assets or only addressed the use of the TVS brand and non-compete conditions.
Sources aligned with Venu and Sudarshan maintain that the agreement formalised the division, with Lakshmi associated with Sundaram Clayton (SCL) and Sudarshan leading TVS Motor Company and TVS Holdings.
However, sources close to Mallika and Lakshmi dispute that a final economic settlement was reached. They argue that business responsibilities do not automatically determine ownership and maintain that both children retain equal rights over Venu’s family wealth.
The disagreement has drawn attention to the widening gap in the market values of the two businesses. TVS Motor had a market capitalisation of around ₹1.83 lakh crore at Thursday’s close, compared with approximately ₹24,000 crore for SCL.
The dispute follows earlier tensions at Sundaram Clayton, where Venu assumed the chairmanship and a larger governance role while Lakshmi continued to focus on the business.
