Vijay Deverakonda’s Ranabaali: Can Rashmika Mandanna’s Film Revive His Career?
After a string of box-office disappointments, Vijay Deverakonda is looking to regain audience confidence with Ranabaali. The historical drama, co-starring Rashmika Mandanna, could mark a new phase in his career.
Vijay Deverakonda’s upcoming film Ranabaali arrives at a crucial point in his career. After several box-office disappointments, the actor is looking to reconnect with audiences through a historical drama directed by Rahul Sankrityan and co-starring Rashmika Mandanna.
Vijay rose to prominence with Pelli Choopulu (2016) and became a major Telugu cinema star after Arjun Reddy (2017). He later demonstrated his wider appeal with successful films such as Geetha Govindam and Taxiwaala.
However, subsequent releases, including Liger, Khushi, The Family Star and Kingdom, failed to deliver the sustained commercial momentum he needed. The results also raised questions about his film choices and the gap between ambitious projects and audience expectations.
His public persona has attracted mixed reactions. While some fans appreciate his confidence, critics have questioned his outspoken style. This scrutiny has sometimes overshadowed discussions about his performances.
Ranabaali offers a different setting. Set against the Great Madras Famine of 1876–78, the film explores colonial exploitation, hunger and resistance. Vijay plays the title character, while Rashmika portrays his wife, Jayamma. The film’s period setting, production design and action sequences have generated interest.
However, scale alone will not guarantee a successful comeback. The screenplay, character development and performances must connect with viewers beyond the promotional campaign.
Ranabaali is scheduled for release on October 15, alongside Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2. Its reception could influence how audiences view Vijay’s next career phase.
