Falguni Pathak has become synonymous with Navratri, with her songs bringing crowds together for Garba and dandiya celebrations every year. But her journey to becoming the Garba Queen began with modest performances and a passion for Gujarati folk music.

Born into a Gujarati family in Mumbai, Falguni began singing at four and started performing professionally at nine. She later revealed that she earned just ₹25 for early shows at weddings and Ganpati celebrations. Although her parents wanted her to pursue a conventional career, she continued to follow her musical ambitions.

Her career gained direction in 1994 when she formed Ta Thaiyaa, her own musical group. Its live performances helped her establish a presence in the Garba circuit, combining traditional Gujarati songs with arrangements that appealed to wider audiences.

Falguni’s popularity expanded nationally with her 1998 album Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi. The title track became a major Indipop hit, followed by popular songs such as Maine Payal Hai Chhankai, Meri Chunar Udd Udd Jaye and Chudi Jo Khanke Haathon Mein.

These songs introduced her to listeners beyond the traditional Garba audience. Her continued focus on live performances strengthened that connection, turning her Navratri shows into an annual attraction for fans across India and abroad.

Her distinctive short-haired look and personal style also became part of her identity. She has recalled resisting suggestions to wear wigs and adopt a different appearance for her music videos.

From earning ₹25 per performance to becoming a festive-season favourite, Falguni’s career reflects decades of dedication to music and her audience.
