Shashi Tharoor Demands SIR Suspension, Seeks Gyanesh Kumar’s Resignation
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor called for a suspension of the Special Intensive Revision process, a review of electoral roll software and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Senior Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor has called for the suspension of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging voter deletions and irregularities in the process.
In an interview, Tharoor said a meaningful outcome would be the restoration of voting rights for Indian citizens affected by the exercise. He demanded a review of the software used to prepare electoral rolls and called for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign.
Tharoor also warned that the Opposition could pursue impeachment if Kumar refused to step down. The demands form part of a broader Opposition campaign seeking changes to the SIR process and raising concerns about the Election Commission of India’s functioning.
The Congress leader also criticised the denotification of Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site. He described the move as an attempt to shift demonstrations away from public view.
Referring to protests across central Delhi, Tharoor stressed the importance of electoral integrity and equal opportunities for political parties. He argued that a level playing field was essential for free and fair elections.
The Opposition’s demands place the electoral-roll revision and the Election Commission’s accountability at the centre of an ongoing political dispute. The allegations of voter deletions and irregularities remain claims raised by the Opposition.
