Indian-American lawmaker Ranjeev Puri is aiming for a historic milestone as he seeks re-election to Michigan’s House of Representatives. A Democratic victory in the November 3 elections could put him on course to become the first Indian-American Speaker of a state House in the United States.

Puri, 42, is contesting against Republican candidate Allison Kay Fuller. Michigan’s 110-member House is currently controlled by Republicans, with Matt Hall serving as Speaker. Democrats hope to win a majority and position Puri to lead the chamber.

Born to Punjabi immigrant parents, Puri made history in 2020 by becoming the first Sikh American elected to Michigan’s House of Representatives. He is currently serving his third term and became the Democratic leader in the Republican-controlled chamber in 2025.

US Congresswoman Haley Stevens has publicly backed the prospect of Puri becoming Speaker if Democrats regain control of the House.

Before entering state politics, Puri worked on Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns in 2008 and 2012. He later earned an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and worked in Michigan’s automotive industry.

Michigan is home to an estimated 127,000 people of Indian origin, representing about 1.27% of the state’s population, according to figures cited in the report.

The November 3 vote will determine whether Puri secures another term and whether Democrats gain the numbers needed to change the chamber’s leadership.
