Crude Oil Above $100 Puts Pressure on Indian Stocks and OMCs
Rising crude oil prices are putting pressure on Indian oil companies, the rupee and stock-market sentiment.
Crude oil prices above $100 a barrel are creating fresh pressure for Indian companies and investors, even though petrol and diesel prices have remained unchanged at fuel pumps.

Brent crude was trading around $107 a barrel on Tuesday as concerns over supplies from West Asia pushed prices higher. India, which imported 88.7% of its crude requirement in FY26, is particularly exposed to a prolonged oil rally.

The immediate impact is being felt by oil marketing companies such as Indian Oil, BPCL and HPCL. ICRA estimates the three companies are collectively losing around Rs 530 crore a day on fuel marketing, with negative marketing margins on petrol and diesel. If crude averages $105-$115 through FY27 while domestic fuel prices remain unchanged, their combined under-recoveries could reach around Rs 64,000 crore.

The pressure also extends beyond OMCs. Airlines, paints, chemicals, tyres, plastics, packaging and logistics companies could face higher input and transportation costs. Businesses may either pass these costs to consumers or absorb them, potentially affecting profit margins.

The rupee falling beyond Rs 96 against the US dollar adds another concern because crude is purchased in dollars. Meanwhile, foreign investors continued selling Indian equities, adding to market pressure.

For investors, the bigger question is not whether crude briefly crosses $100, but how long elevated prices persist. A prolonged oil shock could affect margins, inflation, currency stability and corporate earnings.
