IIT Kanpur Professor Shantanu Bhattacharya Elected NASI Fellow
IIT Kanpur Professor Shantanu Bhattacharya has been elected a NASI Fellow for his contributions to nanotechnology, microfluidics, functional materials and water remediation.
IIT Kanpur Professor Shantanu Bhattacharya has been elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India.
Professor Shantanu Bhattacharya of IIT Kanpur’s Mechanical Engineering Department has been elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI), recognising his contributions to functional materials, nanotechnology, Bio MEMS, microfluidics and related fields. His fellowship will take effect from January 1, 2027.
IIT Kanpur congratulated Bhattacharya on the recognition and highlighted his work in developing functional materials and fabrication processes across different length scales. His research spans Bio MEMS, Lab-on-Chip technologies, microsystems, nanotechnology, sensors, microfluidic systems, acoustic metamaterials, water remediation and energy storage devices.
Bhattacharya currently serves as Director of CSIR-Central Scientific Instruments Organisation in Chandigarh and also holds additional charge as Director of CSIR-Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute in Pilani.
His academic background includes a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Missouri, Columbia, completed in 2006, and an MS in Mechanical Engineering from Texas Tech University, completed in 2003. He earned his BE in Industrial and Production Engineering from Delhi College of Engineering in 1996.
His work connects advanced engineering and materials research with practical applications in areas such as clean water, energy storage and miniaturised biomedical technologies. The NASI Fellowship adds another national-level recognition to his contributions to scientific research and technology development.
