NEET UG 2026: NMC Adds 13,186 MBBS Seats, Total Intake Hits 1.4 Lakh
NMC has added 13,186 MBBS seats for 2026-27, taking the total intake to 1,40,214 across 836 medical colleges as NEET UG counselling continues.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 13,186 additional MBBS seats for the 2026-27 academic year, taking the total medical intake to 1,40,214 seats across 836 colleges. The revised seat matrix comes as NEET UG counselling continues nationwide, expanding the number of available seats for medical aspirants.
Private medical colleges account for most of the increase, with 10,400 new seats added across 391 institutions. Government colleges have received 2,786 additional seats across 445 institutions. The overall intake has increased by around 10.4% from 1,27,028 seats.
Karnataka recorded the largest increase, adding 1,650 seats and taking its total to 15,745 across 76 medical colleges. Tamil Nadu added 1,250 seats, followed by Bihar with 1,240 and Uttar Pradesh with 1,200. Rajasthan added 1,100 seats, while Telangana and West Bengal received 1,010 and 975 additional seats respectively.
The latest increase covers 27 states and Union Territories. Seven regions, including Delhi, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, reported no increase.
The additional seats could improve opportunities for NEET UG candidates, although availability will depend on the counselling process and approved seat matrix. Colleges have also been cautioned against exceeding their sanctioned intake, with discrepancies subject to regulatory review.
