Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has argued that the development of artificial intelligence should not be slowed through new laws, saying companies can address safety through engineering and extensive testing. His comments come amid an expanding debate within the AI industry over regulation and the pace of development.
Speaking at Salesforce’s Dreamforce conference, Huang said AI safety was essential but should primarily be treated as an engineering challenge. He argued that companies should thoroughly test their systems and avoid releasing products when they are not confident about their safety.
Huang also rejected the idea that AI companies must choose between developing technology quickly and ensuring it is safe. He said businesses could pursue both goals by deciding how fast to move based on their confidence in a product’s safety.
His position differs from proposals being discussed by some AI leaders. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has backed greater government involvement in slowing or regulating AI development, while OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has also supported measures aimed at managing potential risks. Safety researchers have separately raised concerns about the possibility of increasingly capable AI systems creating serious risks.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has argued that AI companies should take responsibility for safety themselves. Huang’s comments also align with US President Donald Trump’s position that the country should continue advancing its AI industry rather than deliberately slowing development.
Nvidia plays a central role in the AI industry as a major supplier of advanced chips used to power data centres and AI systems worldwide.
