US President Donald Trump made an unexpected appearance during Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s live panel at the All-In Summit in Los Angeles after calling Huang while he was on stage. Huang answered the phone and put Trump on speaker, allowing the president to address the audience directly.
Trump joked about Huang’s inability to put him on speaker before turning to the growing debate over artificial intelligence safety. He dismissed fears that AI or robots could eventually take control of the world, calling such concerns a “hoax”. Trump argued that slowing the US AI industry would primarily benefit China, which he said would welcome any restrictions on American companies.
Trump also highlighted the growing importance of AI infrastructure, describing data centres as the “oil” of the next 20 to 25 years. He said the country that wins the AI race would gain a major economic advantage, while stressing that the industry should remain cautious without being stopped.
Huang backed Trump’s position, saying Nvidia would work to ensure that American industries, companies and states benefit from the AI race. Nvidia plays a central role in the sector through its advanced GPUs used to power AI data centres.
Trump’s comments come amid growing warnings from AI safety researchers and industry leaders, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, about the risks associated with rapidly advancing AI systems.
