Vibe Movie Review: Kunal Kemmu’s Spy Comedy Is Chaotic but Charming
Kunal Kemmu’s Vibe mixes spy comedy and friendship, with its chaotic humour and lead performances standing out despite an overloaded screenplay.
Vibe follows two unlikely friends, Hardik and Bugs, who find themselves caught in a national-security mission despite having little idea how to handle the world of espionage. Directed by Kunal Kemmu, the film blends buddy comedy with a spy thriller, using the duo’s chaotic friendship as its main source of humour.
Kunal Kemmu plays Hardik as an impulsive and immature character whose poor decisions repeatedly create trouble, while Sparsh Shrivastava’s Bugs provides a more restrained counterbalance. Their chemistry becomes the strongest part of the film, particularly when the story allows their friendship and comic timing to take centre stage.
Preity Zinta plays intelligence operative Madam H, bringing a composed presence to the increasingly chaotic situations surrounding Hardik and Bugs. Sharmila Tagore, Yashpal Sharma, Dinesh Lal Yadav and Vanshika Dhir also contribute to the film’s energetic ensemble.
The screenplay is where Vibe becomes uneven. The film frequently adds new gags, twists and complications, making some portions feel overloaded. The humour works best when it comes naturally from the characters rather than from increasingly elaborate situations.
Despite its messy and occasionally excessive storytelling, Vibe has a distinct comic personality. Its appeal lies less in the espionage plot and more in watching two unprepared friends attempt to navigate a world far beyond their abilities. The film releases in Indian theatres on September 18.
