Women Cops Molested During Rahul Gandhi-Led Protest, Government Tells Supreme Court
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta alleged that women police personnel were molested and injured during an opposition protest in Delhi. The submission comes amid a political row over the INDIA bloc’s demonstration against alleged electoral irregularities.
Women police personnel were allegedly molested and injured during a Congress protest led by Rahul Gandhi in Delhi, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the Supreme Court on Friday.
Representing the government, Mehta said police personnel were also verbally abused during the confrontation but acted responsibly. He argued that the demonstration was unlawful because organisers had not obtained permission.
The submission comes two days after INDIA bloc MPs clashed with police while attempting to march towards Jantar Mantar. The opposition leaders were protesting alleged “vote chori” and demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
BJP Accuses Rahul Gandhi of Misconduct
The BJP had earlier accused Gandhi of pushing and inappropriately touching a woman police officer during a confrontation on Ashoka Road. Police were attempting to remove a woman protester from the sit-in when the incident occurred.
BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari shared a video clip on X, alleging that Gandhi tried to push the officer. Party spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia also questioned Gandhi’s conduct and demanded an apology. The Congress had not issued an immediate response to the allegations, according to the report.
How the Protest Unfolded
Opposition MPs had planned to march to Jantar Mantar after a solidarity lunch hosted by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. Police stopped their buses, and Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other INDIA bloc leaders were detained after being removed from the scene.
The confrontation followed an eight-hour sit-in a day earlier, during which opposition MPs sought a meeting with the Election Commissioners.
The allegations made before the Supreme Court add another layer to the political dispute surrounding the opposition’s protests over electoral integrity.
