Yogesh Singh has begun his second consecutive five-year term as Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University (DU), becoming the first incumbent to secure reappointment under the university’s amended statutes.

Singh’s new term began on October 8, 2026, and will run until October 2031. President Droupadi Murmu, in her capacity as the university’s Visitor, approved his reappointment, which the Union Ministry of Education communicated in July.

Singh took charge as Delhi University’s 23rd Vice-Chancellor on October 8, 2021. His first term saw significant changes in undergraduate admissions, curriculum and degree structures, particularly through the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

CUET and Four-Year Degrees Among Key Reforms

During his first tenure, Delhi University expanded admissions through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) and introduced the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP).

The Undergraduate Curriculum Framework 2022 introduced multidisciplinary learning, multiple entry and exit options, and the Academic Bank of Credits. The university also established new academic centres and implemented changes across colleges and departments.

Why Is His Reappointment a First?

Delhi University amended its statutes in 2023 to allow a Vice-Chancellor to be reappointed for another five-year term. Previously, an incumbent seeking another term had to apply afresh alongside other candidates.

Singh previously served as Vice-Chancellor of Delhi Technological University from 2016 to 2021. He also headed Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda and served as director of Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology.

His second term will provide leadership continuity as Delhi University continues implementing academic reforms and managing changes across its colleges and departments.
