Assi Box Office Day 1: Taapsee Film Opens Slow

Anubhav Sinha’s courtroom drama Assi, starring Taapsee Pannu, had a modest start at the box office on its opening day.

According to early trade estimates reported by Sacnilk, the film collected ₹0.95 crore net in India on Friday. The numbers fall short of last year’s courtroom drama Haq, starring Yami Gautam, which opened at ₹1.75 crore and went on to collect ₹19.86 crore during its theatrical run.

Day 1 Occupancy

The film recorded low occupancy across most regions. Morning shows saw around 3.88% occupancy, followed by 7.24% in the afternoon and 6.92% in the evening.

Chennai reported comparatively stronger footfall, with occupancy touching 20%, while northern cities remained relatively subdued.

With mixed reviews emerging, the film’s performance over the weekend is expected to play a key role in determining its box office trajectory.

About the Film

Assi is directed by Anubhav Sinha and produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar and Anubhav Sinha under the banners of Benaras Mediaworks and T-Series Films.

Apart from Taapsee Pannu, the film features Kani Kusruti, Revathy and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub in important roles. This marks the third collaboration between Taapsee and Anubhav after Mulk and Thappad.

In the film, Taapsee plays a lawyer in a courtroom drama centred around sexual assault cases.

Meaning Behind the Title

The title Assi refers to the reported figure of 80 rape cases filed daily with the police, highlighting the gravity of the issue addressed in the film.

Speaking to PTI, Anubhav Sinha said the number itself was “shocking” when the team calculated it, adding that many incidents go unreported. He described the film as emerging from an “antardwand” (inner conflict) about societal responsibility and accountability.

What’s Next?

Taapsee was last seen in the 2024 releases Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba and Khel Khel Mein.

With a socially relevant theme and courtroom backdrop, Assi now depends on word-of-mouth and weekend growth to strengthen its box office run.
