The Bharatiya Janata Party has strongly criticised Zohran Mamdani, saying India will not tolerate any foreign interference in its internal matters.
The reaction came after Mamdani wrote a handwritten note expressing solidarity with jailed activist Umar Khalid, who is accused in cases linked to the February 2020 violence in northeast Delhi.
Addressing the media in New Delhi, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said that India’s democracy and judicial system are strong and do not need validation or commentary from foreign political leaders.
He questioned Mamdani’s authority to comment on matters related to India’s legal process, stating that such actions amount to interference in the country’s internal affairs.
“If anyone, from outside India, tries to influence or comment on our judicial process while supporting an accused person, the country will not accept it,” the BJP spokesperson said. He added that India’s sovereignty is non-negotiable and that citizens stand united on this issue.
According to the BJP, the people of India have full trust in the judiciary, which is independent and capable of delivering justice without pressure from foreign voices.
Background of the Controversy
The political response followed Mamdani’s personal note to Umar Khalid, which spoke about resilience, hope, and not allowing bitterness to take over. The note was shared publicly on social media by Khalid’s partner, drawing widespread attention and debate.
The BJP argued that such public gestures from foreign leaders risk politicising an ongoing legal matter and could be seen as an attempt to influence India’s judicial process.
Umar Khalid is among several individuals charged under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and provisions of the Indian Penal Code in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots. The violence resulted in the deaths of over 50 people and injuries to hundreds.
Under UAPA, bail provisions are strict, and courts examine cases under a different legal standard due to national security concerns.
India’s Stand on Sovereignty
The BJP reiterated that legal cases in India are decided by courts, not politicians — domestic or foreign. The party emphasised that freedom of expression does not extend to interfering in another nation’s internal judicial matters.
The spokesperson warned that raising questions about India’s legal system from outside the country undermines democratic institutions and disrespects the rule of law.
The issue has sparked a broader discussion on diplomatic boundaries, free speech, and the limits of international political commentary.
