The nutrient Choline has recently gained attention online for its potential role in supporting brain development during pregnancy. Some social media posts have suggested that higher doses of choline could lead to smarter babies, but medical experts say the reality is more complex.
According to Dr Kunal Sood, choline is an essential nutrient that contributes to healthy fetal brain development. However, he clarified that taking high doses of the supplement will not instantly lead to exceptional cognitive abilities in newborns.
Why Choline Matters in Pregnancy
Dr Sood explained that choline plays an important role in building cell membranes in the developing brain. It also helps produce Acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in memory, learning, and attention.
The nutrient also supports the development of the Hippocampus, a brain region associated with memory and cognitive function.
According to experts, adequate choline intake during pregnancy helps provide a strong foundation for brain development in the fetus.
Do Higher Doses Make Babies Smarter?
Some research suggests that higher maternal intake of choline may be linked to small improvements in a child’s cognitive abilities, particularly in areas like attention and information processing.
However, Dr Sood emphasised that these improvements are generally subtle. He noted that choline supplements should not be viewed as a “magic solution” for creating highly advanced intellectual abilities.
Instead, the nutrient supports healthy development rather than guaranteeing exceptional outcomes.
Recommended Intake and Safety
The physician also pointed out that a daily intake of around 900 milligrams of choline—a dose often mentioned in online discussions—is higher than the typical recommended amount for many people.
Because of this, he advised pregnant individuals to consult a doctor before taking high-dose supplements, particularly if their regular diet already includes foods rich in choline.
Natural Sources of Choline
Choline can be obtained through several common foods. Some of the richest sources include:
-
Eggs
-
Meat and poultry
-
Fish
-
Dairy products
Maintaining a balanced diet containing these foods can help many people meet their nutritional requirements.
Expert Advice
Health professionals stress that pregnancy nutrition should be tailored to individual needs. While choline supports brain development, overall maternal health, diet, and medical guidance remain key factors for healthy fetal development.
