India and Brazil are expected to sign a series of agreements in pharmaceuticals, critical minerals and civil aviation during Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s upcoming visit to India, according to officials cited in media reports.
President Lula is scheduled to visit India from February 18 to 22. Discussions are currently underway to finalise multiple memorandums of understanding (MoUs) that could strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries.
Narendra Modi and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva are expected to hold talks during the visit, with trade and strategic sectors on the agenda.
Focus on Pharmaceutical Exports
One of the key proposed agreements is in the health and pharmaceutical sector. Brazil’s public healthcare system requires large quantities of medicines, and Indian pharmaceutical companies are seen as competitive suppliers due to cost advantages.
Officials indicated that a health-sector MoU could create opportunities for Indian drug exporters while supporting Brazil’s domestic healthcare needs.
Critical Minerals Cooperation
Another area of expected collaboration is critical minerals. Brazil has significant mineral reserves, and India has been exploring overseas partnerships to secure resources needed for its industrial and energy strategies.
An agreement in this sector could help both countries expand cooperation in mining and resource development, though specific details of the proposed pact have not been made public.
Aviation and Manufacturing Tie-Up
In the aviation sector, an MoU is also likely between India’s Adani Group and Brazilian aerospace company Embraer.
Adani Defence & Aerospace and Embraer had earlier announced plans to collaborate on setting up a manufacturing facility in India for regional transport aircraft. The expected agreement during Lula’s visit may further formalise cooperation in this area.
Visa Reforms to Boost Ties
Brazil is also considering steps to strengthen people-to-people ties. According to Brazil’s envoy to India, the country plans to introduce a 10-year multiple-entry visa system for Indian tourists.
There are also indications that Brazil may ease business visa rules for Indian professionals, as bilateral trade and investment continue to grow.
Expanding Strategic Partnership
India and Brazil are key members of multilateral groupings such as BRICS and have steadily expanded economic ties over the past decade. Trade between the two countries has diversified across energy, agriculture, pharmaceuticals and engineering goods.
The upcoming visit is expected to build on that foundation by deepening cooperation in high-value sectors like healthcare, minerals and aerospace manufacturing.
While the agreements are still being finalised, officials suggest the visit could mark another step forward in strengthening India–Brazil economic relations.
