India AI Summit 2026: Delhi Hosts Global Tech Leaders

New Delhi is set to host the India AI Impact Summit 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, bringing global technology leaders, policymakers and investors together for discussions on the future of artificial intelligence.

The summit aims to position India as a key player in shaping global AI governance and innovation.

Focus on ‘AI for All’

Unlike earlier global AI meetings that largely focused on safety risks and regulation, India’s approach emphasises inclusive growth and wider access to AI tools.

Government officials have described the theme as “AI for All,” highlighting the need for human-centric and equitable deployment of artificial intelligence.

IT Secretary S. Krishnan said ahead of the summit that India is pushing for democratic access to AI resources while ensuring innovation is not slowed by excessive regulation.

Global Leaders in Attendance

The event is expected to draw major technology executives, including Sundar Pichai of Alphabet, Sam Altman of OpenAI, Demis Hassabis of DeepMind and Dario Amodei of Anthropic.

Several world leaders are also slated to attend, underlining India’s growing role in global technology diplomacy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to participate in high-level discussions, including closed-door meetings with industry leaders.

Innovation-First Regulatory Model

India is currently shaping what officials call an “Innovation-First” regulatory framework.

While the European Union has introduced a comprehensive AI Act and the United States follows an executive-led model, India is signalling a development-focused approach.

Officials have indicated that existing laws may be used to address harms as they arise, instead of imposing broad regulations at the early stage of AI adoption.

However, recent amendments to IT rules—such as requirements around AI-generated content labelling and accountability—are likely to feature in discussions.

Push for Sovereign AI

A central theme of the summit is “Sovereign AI,” reflecting India’s effort to reduce dependence on foreign AI models.

Under the IndiaAI Mission, the government is investing in local computing infrastructure and encouraging the development of indigenous foundation models.

Priority areas include multilingual large language models that support India’s 22 official languages, AI solutions for healthcare and agriculture, and generative AI tools for commerce.

Officials say the goal is to ensure that key sectors such as finance, health and public services are not reliant solely on overseas technology providers.

Workforce and Economic Impact

With artificial intelligence reshaping global industries, the summit will also focus on workforce readiness.

More than 700 sessions are planned, many centred on reskilling and preparing India’s young population for AI-driven jobs.

India’s $250 billion IT services sector is facing structural shifts as AI tools automate routine tasks. Policymakers are aiming to reposition the country from a back-office service provider to a hub for AI innovation.

Global South Perspective

This is the first major AI summit hosted in the Global South. India is expected to advocate for shared digital infrastructure and collaborative AI tools that can benefit emerging economies.

A joint declaration is anticipated, focusing on practical and inclusive AI deployment rather than only risk-based frameworks.

As discussions begin, the summit marks a significant moment in India’s efforts to shape the next phase of the global AI landscape.
