Israeli strikes reportedly targeted several oil storage depots in Iran, including sites in Tehran and nearby Karaj, leading to large fires and explosions late Saturday night.
According to statements from Iranian authorities and international media reports, the attacks marked one of the first known strikes on Iran’s oil storage facilities since the ongoing conflict escalated.
Explosions Reported in Tehran
Residents across Tehran reported hearing loud explosions late Saturday. The blasts were followed by large fires and thick smoke rising from areas believed to contain fuel storage facilities.
Iran’s oil ministry said several storage depots in Tehran and Alborz provinces were hit during the strikes.
Videos circulating on social media showed flames lighting up the night sky, with smoke visible above parts of the Iranian capital. However, the authenticity of some videos could not be independently verified.
Israeli Military Statement
The Israeli military said it had conducted operations targeting fuel storage sites and energy facilities in Tehran. According to its statement, the locations were allegedly being used by Iran’s armed forces.
Israeli officials described the operation as part of a broader effort aimed at weakening military infrastructure linked to Iran.
Airport and Fuel Depot Attacks
The strikes reportedly followed an earlier attack on Mehrabad Airport, Tehran’s main domestic airport.
According to reports citing residents, explosions at the airport and nearby fuel storage areas shook homes several kilometres away.
Iranian state media said one of the storage sites hit was located in Shahr Rey, a district south of Tehran where a major refinery operates.
Another oil storage facility in Shahran, located in northwestern Tehran, was also reportedly struck. A depot in Karaj, west of Tehran, was among the locations affected.
Casualties Reported in Conflict
The broader conflict between Iran, Israel, and the United States has resulted in significant casualties.
Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, said that more than 1,300 Iranian civilians have been killed and thousands injured since the conflict began.
Officials said 10 people in Israel have also been killed in attacks during the escalation. In addition, six United States service members died in a drone strike earlier in the conflict.
Impact on Global Markets
The ongoing conflict has affected international energy markets. Oil prices have reportedly risen sharply as concerns grow about supply disruptions in the region.
Shipping and energy routes have also been affected as tensions increase around the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route.
Conflict Continues Across Region
The confrontation between Iran and its adversaries has expanded across several parts of the Middle East.
Countries in the Gulf region have reported missile and drone attacks in recent days. Iranian officials have said they will continue strikes against targets linked to their adversaries as the conflict enters its second week.
The situation remains fluid, with governments and international organisations closely monitoring developments.
