An explosion was reported near Dubai International Airport on Saturday as tensions linked to the ongoing conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran continue to escalate across the Middle East.
According to witnesses cited by AFP, a blast was heard above the airport followed by a cloud of smoke in the sky. Authorities later clarified that the incident was caused by falling debris after an aerial interception and described it as a minor incident with no reported injuries.
Officials from the Dubai Media Office said the situation had been quickly contained. They also dismissed circulating reports on social media suggesting a direct attack on the airport.
Flights Temporarily Affected
Flight tracking data indicated that several aircraft heading toward Dubai were temporarily placed in holding patterns above the airport following the incident.
Despite the security situation in the region, limited flight operations had resumed earlier in the week at Dubai’s main airport, which is considered one of the world’s busiest international travel hubs.
Earlier incidents linked to the regional conflict had already caused damage at the airport and injured several staff members during drone-related attacks.
Regional Conflict Intensifies
The reported explosion came as missile exchanges and drone attacks continued across the Gulf region. Explosions were also reported in Manama, the capital of Bahrain, where authorities activated warning sirens and urged residents to move to safe locations.
Iran’s military said it had targeted locations linked to US and Israeli forces in the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait as part of its retaliatory campaign.
Meanwhile, the United States Central Command said that American forces had struck more than 3,000 targets in Iran during the first week of the military operation known as Operation Epic Fury.
Saudi Arabia Calls for Restraint
Amid the rising tensions, Saudi Arabia urged Iran to act cautiously to avoid further escalation.
Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman said Iran should “exercise wisdom and avoid miscalculation” following repeated missile and drone launches targeting the kingdom.
His remarks came after Saudi authorities reported intercepting 16 drones headed toward the Shaybah oil field, one of the region’s major energy production sites.
Shipping and Energy Markets Under Pressure
The expanding conflict is also affecting global energy markets and shipping routes. Attacks and security threats around the Strait of Hormuz have disrupted tanker traffic, raising concerns about oil supply.
Global benchmark Brent crude oil prices recently climbed above $92 per barrel, reflecting fears of supply disruptions.
Wider Military Developments
The conflict has also seen continued military activity across multiple fronts. Israeli forces launched new air strikes targeting locations in Tehran, while Iran fired missiles toward Israeli territory and several Gulf states.
The United States is also reportedly increasing its military presence in the region, including the deployment of additional aircraft carrier groups.
Diplomatic contacts between countries have intensified as global leaders call for restraint and dialogue to prevent the situation from escalating further.
As the conflict enters its second week, governments and international organisations continue to monitor developments closely due to the potential impact on regional stability and global energy markets.
