North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was seen in public with his wife and daughter during a visit to the country’s most important state mausoleum, marking a rare and symbolic appearance by his child.
The visit took place at the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun in Pyongyang, where North Korea’s former leaders are honoured. It was the first time Kim’s daughter, believed to be named Kim Ju Ae, was shown visiting the site alongside her parents.
Photographs released by state media showed Kim Ju Ae standing between her father and mother, Ri Sol Ju, during the visit. Senior officials were also present. Such appearances are closely watched because public imagery in North Korea is tightly controlled and often carries political meaning.
Over the past few years, Kim Ju Ae has appeared more frequently at major state events. This has led analysts and intelligence agencies to speculate that she may be prepared for a future leadership role. However, North Korean authorities have not confirmed this, and South Korea’s government has said it is too early to describe her as a successor because she is young and holds no official position.
Experts say the visit may be part of an effort to present a picture of stability and continuity in leadership. In North Korea, family lineage plays a central role in politics, and public appearances at historic sites often reinforce dynastic tradition.
Kim Jong Un regularly visits the Kumsusan Palace on important dates to pay respects to his grandfather Kim Il Sung and his father Kim Jong Il. Including his daughter in such a visit is seen as symbolically significant, even though no formal announcement has been made.
