Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated the team of Boong after the film created history at the British Academy Film Awards 2026.
The Manipuri film became the first Indian project to win in the Best Children’s and Family Film category at the prestigious ceremony held at London’s Royal Festival Hall.
PM Modi’s Message
In a post on X, the Prime Minister praised the filmmakers and artists behind the achievement. He said the win was a moment of immense joy, particularly for Manipur, and highlighted the creative talent present across the country.
The message followed the film’s landmark victory at BAFTA, marking a significant milestone for Indian cinema on the global stage.
Emotional Acceptance Speech
Director Lakshmipriya Devi accepted the award on behalf of the team. During her speech, she expressed hope for peace to return to Manipur and spoke about the children affected by unrest in the region.
She mentioned that several child actors from the film were among those displaced and used the platform to share a message of resilience and optimism.
Producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani were present at the ceremony along with members of the film’s team.
About the Film
Set in Manipur, Boong tells the story of a young boy determined to reunite his family. The protagonist, played by Gugun Kipgen, embarks on a journey with his best friend in search of his missing father. Actor Bala Hijam portrays his mother.
The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024 under the Discovery section and was later screened at several international events, including the Warsaw International Film Festival, the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival and the International Film Festival of India.
With its BAFTA win, Boong has added a significant chapter to India’s growing recognition in global cinema, especially in children’s storytelling.
