Politicians from different political parties strongly criticised a derogatory comment made about women from Bihar by Girdhari Lal Sahu, the husband of an Uttarakhand minister. The comment caused widespread anger and condemnation across the political spectrum.
The controversy began after a video surfaced on social media in which Mr. Sahu was allegedly heard saying that girls from Bihar were “available for marriage” for a certain amount of money. The remark was reportedly made during an event held in Almora district of Uttarakhand last month.
Leaders from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and independent MPs strongly condemned the statement. They said the remark insulted the dignity of women and painted Bihar’s daughters and sisters in a degrading way.
Senior BJP leader Dilip Jaiswal said the language used was unacceptable and must be condemned. He added that such words do not reflect the values of society. The BJP’s Uttarakhand unit later distanced itself from Mr. Sahu, stating that he has no official connection with the party. Mr. Sahu also issued a public apology after the backlash.
RJD leaders reacted sharply, saying the comment insulted all women of Bihar. RJD spokespersons demanded strict action and questioned whether the BJP leadership would take responsibility for the behaviour of leaders’ family members. The RJD women’s wing organised a protest march in Patna and burned an effigy of the BJP as a mark of protest.
Independent MP Pappu Yadav also criticised the remark and said that such language against women should not be tolerated in a civilised society. He demanded strong legal action against people who make such statements.
The issue also revived debate on women’s dignity and respect in public life. Opposition leaders linked the incident to earlier controversies involving insensitive behaviour towards women by political leaders, including an incident involving Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.Overall, the incident sparked a strong political reaction and highlighted the need for accountability, respect for women, and responsible conduct by those associated with public life
