The Delhi High Court is scheduled to hear actor Rajpal Yadav’s bail plea today in connection with a long-running cheque bounce case.
The Bollywood actor is currently lodged in Tihar Jail after surrendering earlier this month following a court directive.
Background of the Case
The matter dates back to 2010, when Yadav received ₹5 crore from a Delhi-based company, Murli Projects Private Limited, for his directorial film Ata Pata Laapata.
According to court records, several cheques issued in repayment were dishonoured. The case was subsequently filed under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
Over time, interest and penalties reportedly increased the outstanding amount to nearly ₹9 crore.
In 2018, a trial court convicted Yadav in the cheque bounce case and sentenced him to six months of simple imprisonment. The decision was upheld by an appellate court in 2019.
In 2024, the High Court temporarily suspended his sentence on certain conditions. However, the court later observed that the required payments were not made as directed. Earlier this month, the High Court rejected his request for additional time to arrange funds and directed him to surrender.
Yadav surrendered at Tihar Jail in early February 2026.
Actor’s Stand
Yadav has publicly maintained that the ₹5 crore amount was not a loan but an investment made in the film project. In past interviews, he stated that the financer had invested in the film and that the financial dispute arose after the movie failed commercially.
The complainant company has treated the amount as recoverable dues, leading to prolonged legal proceedings.
Support from Film Fraternity
Several members of the film industry have expressed support for the actor during this period.
Actor Sonu Sood announced that he has signed Yadav for an upcoming film project and clarified that the advance payment is professional support rather than charity.
Other actors, including Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Varun Dhawan, have reportedly extended assistance. Singer Guru Randhawa confirmed transferring an advance amount for a video project featuring Yadav.
Music producer Rao Inderjeet Singh announced financial assistance of ₹1.11 crore, while singer Mika Singh also pledged support.
The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has urged members of the film industry to extend moral and financial support to Yadav.
Yadav’s wife, Radha Yadav, has publicly thanked colleagues and well-wishers for standing by the family during the legal proceedings.
What Happens Next
The bail plea will be heard by Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma. The outcome will determine whether Yadav receives temporary relief while the matter continues in court.
Legal experts note that the hearing will focus on compliance with earlier court directions and the status of repayment efforts.
For now, the industry and the actor’s family are awaiting the High Court’s decision.
