Ranveer Moves Karnataka HC in Kantara FIR Case

Actor Ranveer Singh has approached the Karnataka High Court to challenge an FIR registered against him over his on-stage mimicry of Rishab Shetty during a public event last year.

The matter was mentioned before Justice M Nagaprasanna on Monday and has been listed for further hearing.

What Led to the FIR

The controversy stems from an appearance at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on November 28 last year. During the event, Ranveer praised Rishab Shetty’s performance in Kantara Chapter 1 and briefly mimicked expressions from the film while speaking on stage.

A complaint was later filed alleging that the mimicry insulted religious sentiments and disrespected the daiva or bhoota kola tradition of coastal Karnataka, which forms a key cultural element in the film.

In January 2026, an FIR was registered in Bengaluru following court directions. The case was booked under Sections 196, 299 and 302 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The complainant, identified as advocate Prashanth Methal, alleged that Ranveer portrayed expressions associated with Panjuluri and Guliga Daiva in a disrespectful manner and objected to remarks referring to Chavundi Daiva as a “female ghost.”

Ranveer’s Argument in Court

According to reports from the court proceedings, Ranveer’s counsel argued that the actor’s remarks were an expression of appreciation and admiration for Rishab Shetty’s performance and were being given a “criminal colour.”

When the matter was sought to be listed urgently, the court reportedly deferred it to the next day.

The case is also scheduled for hearing on April 8 before the 1st Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in Bengaluru.

What Happened at IFFI

At the IFFI event, Ranveer praised Rishab’s acting, particularly a dramatic sequence from the film. During his speech, he briefly recreated facial expressions from a scene.

Rishab, who was present on stage, reportedly asked him not to repeat the gestures. Ranveer again mimicked the expression while greeting him.

Following public criticism, Ranveer issued an apology, stating that his intention was to highlight Rishab’s “incredible performance” and that he meant no disrespect to religious traditions or sentiments.

Cultural Sensitivity and Legal Debate

The case has sparked debate around artistic expression, cultural sensitivity and the limits of public performance.

Bhoota kola, or daiva worship, is a traditional ritual practice in coastal Karnataka. Supporters of the complaint argue that religious traditions must be treated with respect, while others say that intent and context should be considered.

As the legal proceedings continue, the Karnataka High Court’s decision on Ranveer’s plea will determine whether the FIR stands or is quashed.

Ranveer was last seen in Dhurandhar, and his upcoming film Dhurandhar 2 is scheduled for release in March.
