Shreya Ghoshal Says Devdas Fame Didn’t Bring Instant Work

Playback singer Shreya Ghoshal has revealed that her breakthrough debut in Devdas did not immediately translate into more work in the film industry.

In a recent interview with ABP Network, Shreya said that even after the success of Devdas, she had to wait a long time for her next opportunity.

A Strong Beginning

Shreya made her Bollywood playback debut with Devdas, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The film starred Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Madhuri Dixit.

She lent her voice to five songs in the film, including “Silsila Ye Chahat Ka,” “Bairi Piya,” and “Dola Re Dola.” The album received widespread appreciation and established her as a promising new voice in Hindi cinema.

Waiting for the Right Opportunity

Despite the strong launch, Shreya said that offers did not immediately follow.

She shared that she chose not to chase work aggressively and instead waited for suitable projects. According to her, every song requires the right voice and timing to create an impact.

A Bold Choice in Jism

Her next major breakthrough came with “Jaadu Hai Nasha Hai” from the film Jism, which was picturised on Bipasha Basu.

Shreya admitted she initially felt unsure about whether her voice suited the character. However, composer M. M. Keeravani believed her voice was the right fit for the song.

She explained that she did not consciously try to sound sensuous, noting that she was only 18 at the time. She described the song as carrying the rawness of youth rather than deliberate styling.

A Long and Award-Winning Career

Over the years, Shreya Ghoshal has delivered numerous hit songs across genres. Some of her popular tracks include “Ye Ishq Hai,” “Manwa Laage,” “Sunn Raha Hai,” “Agar Tum Mil Jao,” “Deewani Mastani,” and “Chikni Chameli.”

She has received multiple honours, including five National Film Awards, and remains one of the most respected voices in Indian music.

Her recent comments offer a reminder that even a successful debut does not always guarantee immediate continuity in the industry.
