Speeding Thar Kills Two in Chandigarh; Accused Gets Bail

Two brothers were killed after a speeding Mahindra Thar rammed into their motorcycle near Kalagram in Chandigarh late Tuesday night, police said.

The victims, identified as Gulsher Ali (46) and Abdul Subhaan (44), were residents of Saharanpur and worked as teachers at a madrassa. They had arrived in Chandigarh on February 21 for madrassa-related work and were staying with a relative in Manimajra.

What Happened

According to police, the accident took place around 11 pm near the Kalagram traffic signal. The brothers were riding a motorcycle when they slowed down as the signal was about to turn red.

An SUV allegedly driven at high speed hit their bike from behind.

Passersby immediately alerted emergency services by calling 112. Both men were rushed to PGI, where Gulsher Ali was declared dead on arrival. Abdul Subhaan later succumbed to injuries during treatment.

Accused Arrested, Granted Bail

The SUV driver allegedly fled the scene after the crash. However, a passerby noted down the vehicle’s registration number, helping Manimajra police trace and arrest the accused.

Police identified the driver as an 18-year-old resident of Sector 22. Officials confirmed that he was later released on bail. His father is a serving head constable.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident.

Family Impact

Gulsher Ali is survived by his wife and five children, while Abdul Subhaan leaves behind his wife and four children. After postmortem formalities, the bodies were handed over to the family.

Separate Fatal Accident

In another incident, a 28-year-old delivery worker, Akshay, died early Wednesday after his motorcycle reportedly skidded near the dividing road of Sectors 42/43.

Police said he was heading home around 2 am when he lost control of his bike near Sector 43 District Court. He sustained serious head injuries and was declared dead at GMSH-16. Officials said no helmet was found at the accident site.

Series of Thar-Linked Crashes

The Chandigarh region has witnessed multiple fatal crashes involving SUVs, including Mahindra Thar vehicles, in recent months. Previous incidents include fatal accidents in October and December 2025 and earlier cases in 2024 and 2023 involving alleged speeding and reckless driving.

Police have urged motorists to follow traffic rules and avoid overspeeding, especially near traffic signals and residential areas.

The investigation into Tuesday’s crash is ongoing.
