Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday compared Delhi’s air quality to a “gas chamber,” while saying that Uttar Pradesh is maintaining development without compromising the environment.
He made the remarks while speaking at the inauguration of a renovated block development office in Jungle Kauria, Gorakhpur.
Comments on Air Quality
Adityanath said environmental degradation is one of the biggest global challenges today. He claimed that parts of Uttar Pradesh currently enjoy a cleaner environment with lower pollution levels.
Referring to the national capital, he said the air quality there makes it difficult to breathe and causes discomfort, especially for children, the elderly, and people with respiratory conditions.
According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data cited in reports, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 211 on Saturday morning, placing it in the “poor” category.
As per CPCB standards, an AQI of 201 to 300 is classified as “poor,” which may cause breathing discomfort for people with lung or heart conditions.
Neighbouring cities in the National Capital Region, including Noida, Ghaziabad and Gurugram, also experience high pollution levels during winter. Lucknow recorded similar conditions last December.
Focus on Development and Environment
The chief minister said Uttar Pradesh aims to balance development with environmental protection. He warned that ignoring environmental concerns could lead to severe health impacts.
During the event, Adityanath also announced that a proposed Forestry and Horticulture University in Campierganj would offer “job-guarantee” degrees. He said the institution would help increase forest cover, protect biodiversity and boost farmers’ income.
According to him, the university’s courses and diplomas would create employment opportunities in India and abroad.
Conservation and Infrastructure
Adityanath referred to the Vulture Conservation Centre in Campierganj, stating that it reflects efforts to protect declining vulture populations. He linked the conservation drive to cultural values and environmental responsibility.
He also highlighted local development projects, including improved road connectivity through the Kalesar-Jungle Kauria bypass, expansion of major roads to four lanes and flood-control measures in the region.
The chief minister said welfare schemes such as housing, sanitation, healthcare under Ayushman Bharat and pension distribution are being implemented in the area.
At the event, he paid tribute to former block chief Rampati Yadav and later inspected reconstruction works. He also planted a sapling as part of the programme.
The remarks on Delhi’s air quality come amid ongoing discussions on pollution control and environmental policies across northern India.
