The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced the results of the Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2025, with Anuj Agnihotri securing All India Rank (AIR) 1.
The 25-year-old, who holds an MBBS degree from AIIMS Jodhpur, shared that his motivation to pursue civil services came from a desire to contribute to society.
Speaking after the results, Agnihotri said his mother had been a major source of inspiration. According to him, her encouragement to work for the welfare of people played a key role in shaping his career goals.
From Medicine to Civil Services
Agnihotri began his MBBS studies in 2017 at AIIMS Jodhpur. During his medical education, he realised that administrative roles could allow him to bring change on a larger scale.
“I was not very clear about my exact goal initially, but I always wanted to serve people and make a meaningful impact,” he said.
After discussing the idea with his parents, he decided to prepare for the civil services examination.
Earlier Success in UT Civil Services
Before topping the UPSC exam, Agnihotri had already cleared the Union Territories Civil Services (UTCS) examination in 2023 in his first attempt.
He is currently undergoing probation and serving as a Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) in Delhi.
Despite his administrative responsibilities, he continued preparing for the UPSC exam.
Self-Study and Discipline
According to his family, Agnihotri cleared the UPSC examination in his third attempt. Notably, he prepared without joining any coaching institute.
His father, Krishna Bihari, who works as a technician at the Rajasthan Atomic Power Station, said his son relied entirely on self-study and discipline.
“He studied for around 13 hours every day. We are very proud of him and believe he will become a capable IAS officer,” his father said.
A Personal Moment of Achievement
Agnihotri also recalled the emotional moment when he first cleared the UT Civil Services examination.
He said he found it hard to believe the result and spent time alone reflecting on the achievement.
A Journey Driven by Purpose
Agnihotri’s journey highlights how candidates from diverse academic backgrounds continue to succeed in India’s most competitive examination.
His story of transitioning from medicine to public administration reflects the broader appeal of the civil services among young professionals aiming to work in governance and public service.
